This summer season we were pleasantly surprised to discover some jewels among Rome’s thousands of holiday apartment rentals. The below options represent unique value in terms of very reasonable rates with high-level amenities, quality, and location for families in the city.
The neighborhood of Rione Monti is a top pick for us when staying in Rome, a locals enclave just a stone’s throw from the Coliseum that offers a haven from the crowds. The streets of Via dei Serpenti and Via del Boschetto have many simple take out dining options, small local markets, a Conad supermarket (on Via del Boschetto), the infamous
Hotel Apollo Annex Apartments in Monti
Via dei Serpenti 109-110
Rione Monti, Rome
Fatamorgana gelateria, and poignant piazzas to enjoy it all. We had a pleasant, and very restful, quiet (!) stay at the annex apartments of the Hotel Apollo. The hotel itself is on Via dei Serpenti, were a few blocks away on Via Urbana. Convenient to the Cavour metro stop, the ever useful Bus 117 small electric bus that winds through the historical center, a 10 minute walk to Via Nazionale or the Coliseum, the list goes on. The apartments were meticulous, recently renewed, with triple-paned glass on the windows and a/c in every room. The hotel itself offers a range of family room options, and a charming roof top terrace with an ample breakfast. The modern elevator in the apartment building was a very welcome bonus after a long travel day with 5 children!
Via Giulia 189A
Navona, Rome
Nestled between the Tiber across from Ponte Sisto and the elegant Piazza Farnese, one of the most kid-friendly piazzas in the city in our opinion, the majestic Via Giulia, a Renaissance “boulevard,” one of the first examples of Pope Julius II’s urban renewal projects, which accounts for the street’s width while still retaining the cobblestoned pavement of medieval Rome. The street was somewhat of the Fifth Avenue for wealthy Florentine merchant families of the 16th century, and the beauty of the palazzos lining the street, where these are apartments are now found, creates a stately aesthetic amid Rome’s otherwise palimpsest of architecture. For families traveling in the summer, we find this area of the city to be
slightly cooler due to its proximity to the river, with the call of seagulls hinting at a sea breeze. Families can find less touristy dining and shopping just across the Ponte Sisto in Trastevere, or easily walk to the play park next to the Castel Sant’Angelo to let the kids run around a bit. Maison Giulia offers a selection of apartments from studio to 2 bedroom, as well as triple and quad family rooms in the B&B itself. Apartments are equipped with every amenity, and well-supplied kitchenettes. The 2-bedroom apartment in the Residence Capo di Ferro building has a lovely terrace with storybook views of Roman rooftops.
